Our New Name FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About Our Name Change
Why are you changing the name?
More than insensitive, the word “suicide” evokes strong feelings in those whose lives have been touched by this tragedy. As of late, there has been a groundswell of consciousness and a growing sense of responsibility to address the importance of mental health. This community treasure deserves a name that speaks to its values and experiences, not one associated with pain and heartbreak.
Why are you making this change now?
If not for the challenges and uncertainty during the pandemic, the process to rename the Ski Area would have begun earlier. Certainly, the additional stress placed upon our community and the world around us over the past two years brought the issue of the name to the forefront. As responsible members of the community, we are doing this now because it is the right thing to do.
When will you implement the new name?
The name change will be implemented immediately on our website, social media, and necessary signage. We estimate two years for a full changeover of all resort and local signage as well as other branded materials.
Why did you choose an Abenaki word as the name?
Exhaustive research was done to explore a number of options. The research into Hill no. 6 and the land, naturally led to its original inhabitants, the Abenaki people. That’s when contact was made, and a partnership formed with Chief Don Stevens of the Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk-Abenaki Nation. With the intent to keep the “S6” abbreviation, the word “saskadena” rose to the top quickly. The meaning of the word - “standing mountain” - furthered our decision as it provides a powerful symbol.
Will changing the name erase the mountain’s history?
The history of S6 is not being forgotten or changed. We cherish every part of the history of the mountain, including its old name, which will remain a defining part of the legacy. That said, we are excited to contribute to the longevity of the ski area and the name change is just the newest step in the evolution of the mountain’s long story.
Where can I purchase old and new branded merchandise?
Our Ski Shop will be selling branded items with both the Suicide 6 and Saskadena Six names this season. Limited "Suicide 6" gear will be available during the 2022-23 ski and ride season, and slowly faded out over the next two years. The shop will open in early December, prior to the season start.
